Deep Sea Fishing in Mauritius

Deep Sea Fishing in Mauritius Mauritius, situated amidst the calm serene waters of Indian Ocean, continues to fulfill every visitor's dream of a tropical island, from swaying palms to the dazzling blue of the ocean and smiling people. Add to this the adventure of deep-sea fishing and Mauritius has all the elements that make a great tropical holiday destination.

Deep-sea fishing, as the name suggests is hunting for the game fishes that are generally found deep out in the sea. And the waters of Mauritius are absolutely perfect for deep-sea fishing. It can be said that Mauritius is indeed an angler's paradise with such an exotic variety of game fishes on offer.

The waters of Mauritius are home to a huge variety of marine fauna, such as the marlins, sharks, tuna and the sailfish. Anglers are spoilt for choice between blue and black marlins, all types of sharks like hammerhead, mako, tiger and black fin, yellow Tunas, the Bonitos and the Barracuda.

Mauritius is fast emerging as a hub of deep sea fishing. Having several world fishing records that include a mako shark of 115 pounds, the blue shark of 400 pounds, a bonito of 41.5 pounds, a white tuna of 224 pounds and a 'bécune' of 125 pounds, not to mention the blue marlins weighing around 1430 pounds, Mauritius is home to an exotic variety of game fishes. Even the world famous deep sea fishing competition- the Marlin World Cup was hosted by Mauritius at the La Pirogue Hotel. All these have combined together to place Mauritius firmly on the world map as far as deep sea fishing goes.

Deep sea fishing goes on throughout the year in Mauritius, even though the best season is from October to April, especially for those who are on the lookout for marlins. This time period is the best as during this phase, these predators feed very close to the island where the sea bottom falls to 70 metres that is just a mile from shore.

The deep sea fishing boats are all equipped with state of the art equipment that includes ship-to-shore radio and trolling equipment for both live bait and artificial lures. The largest of such deep sea fishing fleets co are located at the Trou-Aux-Biches and Grand Baie, namely the Corsaire Club and the SportFish.

Mauritius provides pure game fishing enjoyment. Little can compare the thrill of riding the ocean swells in a sleek ship in the hot pursuit of game fish. With an astonishing variety of deep-sea fauna, Mauritius is a compulsory stop for deep sea fishing lovers.
