Founded in the year 1972, Plain Coral Airport is another important paved airport in Mauritius. It is situated in south-eastern Rodrigues Island. It was originally founded as the national base of Air Mauritius flights. However expansion of tourism in Mauritius led the a larger influx of tourists to Mauritius. As a result the Plain Coral Airport was also expanded so that it can serve larger number of people.
The unpaved airports in Mauritius are seasonal and operate during the spring and summer seasons. Most domestic flight operate from the unpaved airports in Mauritius. The paved and the unpaved airports in Mauritius play an important role in the country's transportation system.
